Applications

What is a Versal™ SoM?

A Versal™ System-on-Module (SoM) is a compact and pre-integrated platform that combines an AMD Versal adaptive SoC, memory, power management, and high-speed interfaces into a single module. By integrating all critical components on a validated platform, a SoM significantly reduces development complexity and accelerates time-to-market.

Unlike a custom FPGA board design, a Versal™ SoM allows engineers to focus on application development rather than hardware integration. It provides a scalable and flexible foundation for demanding embedded applications requiring advanced processing, artificial intelligence acceleration, low-latency data handling, and high-bandwidth connectivity.

The Vulcan SoM leverages AMD Versal Prime and AI Edge technologies to deliver a powerful solution for embedded computing, signal processing, AI inference, radar systems, electronic warfare, and scientific instrumentation.

Versal™ Prime vs Versal™ AI Edge

AMD offers several Versal device families optimized for different application requirements.

Versal™ Prime
Versal™ Prime devices are designed to provide an optimal balance between compute performance, connectivity, and system integration. They are particularly suited for embedded systems, networking equipment, industrial applications, and real-time data processing environments where flexibility and scalability are key requirements.

Versal™ AI Edge
Versal™ AI Edge devices extend the adaptive computing architecture with dedicated AI Engines optimized for machine learning and edge AI workloads. These devices are ideal for applications involving computer vision, sensor fusion, autonomous systems, and real-time artificial intelligence processing.

By supporting both Versal Prime and Versal AI Edge technologies, the Vulcan SoM enables designers to select the most appropriate architecture according to their application requirements while maintaining a common hardware platform.

Applications of the Vulcan SoM

The Vulcan SoM is designed for high-performance embedded applications requiring real-time processing, advanced connectivity, and adaptive computing capabilities.

Artificial Intelligence and Edge Computing
Powered by AMD Versal AI Edge devices, the module accelerates AI inference workloads directly at the edge, reducing latency and enabling real-time decision making in autonomous and intelligent systems.

Radar and Signal Processing
The combination of programmable logic, integrated processing engines, and high-speed interfaces makes the Vulcan SoM well suited for radar processing, software-defined radio, and complex signal processing applications.

Electronic Warfare
For electronic warfare and defense systems, the platform provides the deterministic performance, low latency, and adaptability required to process and react to evolving electromagnetic environments.

Quantum Computing and Scientific Instrumentation
The Vulcan SoM can also support advanced scientific applications requiring ultra-fast data acquisition, synchronization, and real-time processing, including quantum computing research and bioscience instrumentation.
